Could this technological advance stop our distracted driving epidemic?

Today, we live in a technological world. Smartphones, iPads, GSP services, tracking devices-you name it-our 21st century society functions on digital devices and it's not changing anytime soon.

According to some, a new application may prove useful in combating the continued, unstoppable increase in distracted driving accidents that kill and injury innocent individuals every day.

It's being referred to as the "Textalyzer."

Much like a breathalyzer that detects an individual's blood alcohol content roadside, the Textalyser, as it's similarly called, would be able to detect the exact time a driver was texting, emailing or using his or her phone in any way.

The goal of the device is basically to determine culpability for auto accident collisions-and that's what the New York legislature hopes to accomplish.

They have introduced a bill that would give police authority to use such devices on drivers involved in serious motor vehicle accidents.

Bill advocates argue that, if passed, it would be a real deterrent to distracted driving. If drivers knew that their mobile device use could be scrutinized so easily, they may be more inclined to simply put the phone down when they get behind the wheel. And thus focus on the road.

Opponents, however, say that it's a clear violation of privacy rights and an individual's constitutional protection against unreasonable search and seizures under the 4th amendment.

However, the bill has limits. It would not allow authorities to read or view the actual content of the text or email, only when and how the Smartphone was used in order to determine any possible correlation to the cause of the auto accident.

It remains to be seen whether the bill will pass, but more importantly, if other state legislatures, like Florida, will jump on board and think about implementing a similar law.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 1000 people all across the nation every single day are injured in an auto accident as a result of a distracted driver.
